Promising eternal love to Kathleen Quinlan in "The Promise." This photo was used in a two-page pull-out ad in "Variety" at a time when the studio (Universal) was feeling confident about the movie because it tested phenomenally well with preview audiences, outscoring such previous hits as "The Sting" and even "Jaws." But when early critical reviews were lukewarm-to-poor, Universal lost its nerve and pulled the opening way back to a small number of cities and the movie wasn't really given a chance. It's also the last movie to open a regular run at Radio City Music Hall (where, despite almost no promotion, it did very good business).
