As Ashley Wilkes in "Scarlett," the miniseries sequel to "Gone with the Wind," (1995, CBS) - "My old director friend John Erman offered me the role of Ashley, and, as daunting as it was to think of following in Leslie Howard's footsteps, I finally figured that since somebody was going to do it, it might as well be me. I don't think we made anybody forget the original, but it gave me an excuse to read Margaret Mitchell's fine novel in order to research the character of Ashley. I was surprised that Mitchell describes Ashley as 'the best rider, shooter, poker player, and drinker in the county.' He'd always seemed sort of effete to me in the movie. They curled my hair every day for hours, and I grew a moustache, which Mitchell describes Ashley as having, but which, for some reason, Leslie Howard chose not to use. John Erman didn't want any of us to try to look like the original cast, which was a wise choice, and I got to reprise the genteel Georgia accent I'd learned years before for 'Chiefs.' Of course, Leslie Howard used his own English accent, so my moustache and accent were probably my only contributions to the role, which was really a kind of glamorized cameo.
